Fellowships

  • AAF/Seebacher Prize for the Arts provides fine arts graduate students at American universities, or those who have completed their graduate studies within the past two years, fellowships to study at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts Salzburg in Austria.

  • American Association of University Women is one of the world's largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women. For MFA candidates, funding would be possible through the Career Development Grants and the International Fellowships.

  • Bush Artist Fellows Program provides artists with financial and professional development support.

  • Can Serrat works as a self funded project for art production focused on contemporary practices & research. Every year a jury selects six local and/or international artists -2 writers, 3 visual artists and 1 sound artist/musician- for a complete scholarship and a certain amount of artists for a partial scholarships. Located in El Bruc, near Barcelona, Spain.

  • Center for Craft, Creativity and Design awards the Windgate Fellowship and Craft Research Fund for projects and graduate research.

  • *Chicago Artists Coalition (CAC) is an online extension of the capabilities, resources and leadership of the city's cultural community. CAC provides artists with information on a wide range of issues related to professional practice and a connection to local, national and international resources.

  • *City of Chicago Individual Artists Program (IAP) awards project grants to resident Chicago artists over the age of 18 across numerous disciplines and through six funding categories.

  • College Art Association offers the Professional Development Fellowship Program for MFA and PhD candidates in art and art history.

  • Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is designed to support writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants.

  • Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting is an international competition open to screenwriters who have not earned more than $5,000 writing for film or television..

  • Fulbright Scholar Programs offer U.S. faculty, administrators and professionals grants to lecture or do research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields, or to participate in seminars.

  • Getty Foundation fellowships and grants support a diverse range of projects all over the world that strengthen the understanding and preservation of the visual arts.

  • Gordon Parks Foundation annually supports photographers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians working within the theme of social justice with short-term fellowships up to the amount of $10,000 each.

  • *Luminarts offers programs in Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Classical Music, and Jazz. In order to be eligible to apply for the Fellowship Program applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30, live or reside within 150 miles of the Chicago Loop, and be currently enrolled in, or graduated from, a degree program, conservatory, or other professional artist development program.

  • National Endowment for the Arts offers Creative Writing Fellowships for individuals and project funding for groups and organizations.

  • National Gallery of Art, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts programs include fellowships, meetings, research, and publications.

  • NYC Teaching Fellows is an alternative teacher preparation program with training in New York City classrooms.

  • New York Foundation for the Arts is the largest national online resource for jobs and internships, opportunities and services, event listings and studio spaces for artists, arts administrators and museum professionals.

  • Paint School is a free master class in the theory and practice of painting that takes place in New York City. This lecture-based program brings twelve fellows together with six individuals widely recognized as among the most exceptional painters working today. This program is best suited for those who have completed their formal education, and is open to painters as well as other art professionals with a deep connection to painting. An exhibition of work by Paint School fellows is held at the end of each term.

  • Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans annually invests in the graduate education of 30 New Americans—immigrants and children of immigrants—who are poised to make significant contributions to US society, culture or their academic field.

  • PEN USA Emerging Voices Fellowship is a literary mentorship that aims to provide new writers who are isolated from the literary establishment with the tools, skills, and knowledge they need to launch a professional writing career.

  • Pew Fellowships in the Arts offers twelve annual fellowships which provide unrestricted grants to individual artists working in all disciplines as well as several grants.

  • Phillips Academy Andover offers a teaching fellowship for their art department.

  • Poets & Writers pays fees to writers giving readings or conducting workshops in New York and California, and in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

  • Princess Grace Foundation-USA awards scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships to emerging talent in theater, dance, and film.

  • Project Art offers emerging artists studio spaces, compensation, and artist talk opportunities to create and advance socially-engaged work.

  • Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study annually selects and supports 50 leading artists and scholars who have both exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishments.

  • Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

  • Smithsonian American Art Museum offers academic opportunities for scholars at the graduate level and above, research opportunities for visiting scholars, and professional museum training for college seniors and graduate students.

  • The Smithsonian American Art Museum offers Fellowships in art research.

  • The Southeastern College Art Association SECAC supports member artists and encourages individual creative growth, the development of new ideas for exhibitions and creative projects.

  • The Santa Fe Art Institute grants fellowships, residency awards and scholarships.

  • Snider Prize is a purchase award from the Museum of Contemporary Photography to emerging artists as they leave graduate school.

  • Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s African-American Fellowship is a two-year professional program for early career, African-American arts administrators.

  • The Clark offers between fifteen and twenty Clark Fellowships each year, ranging in duration from less than a month to ten months.

  • The Summer Literary Seminar's literary contest for a full tuition waiver to the program in Kenya, Montreal, or Tbilisi and publication of the winning entry.

  • Taliesin Nexus' Odysseus fellowship for filmmakers places qualified applicants in paid three-month internships at leading production companies.

  • Wheaton Arts Creative Glass Center of America Fellowship Program is a professional level program for focused and self-directed artists working in glass.

  • Wolfsonian Museum at Florida International University offers a research fellowship promoting the examination of modern material culture.

  • Women In Film Foundation Film Finishing Fund supports filmmakers who make thoughtful and provocative films by or about women.

  • Women’s Studio Workshop Fellowship opportunities are designed to provide concentrated work time in a dynamic and supportive community of women artists.

  • Yale Summer School of Music/Norfolk Chamber Music Festival programs are dedicated to the training and development of professional musicians of the highest caliber.


Grants

  • *3Arts offers Chicago-based women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities who are working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts. They also offer residency fellowships.

  • The Aaron Siskind Individual Photographers Fellowship Grants offers a limited number of fellowship grants of up to $10,000 each for individuals working in photography and photography-based art.

  • The Alexia Foundation offers production grants to students and professional photographers to give them the financial ability to produce substantial stories that drive change in the effort to make the world a better place. Students also get scholarship opportunities.

  • A Blade of Grass partners with individual artists and collectives who are working in leadership roles and in partnership with communities, in ways that are relevant in everyday life, at ambitious scale, to enact social change.

  • Artist Trust offers grants for Washington State-based artists. The grants range from project funds and major merit awards to residencies across the United States.

  • Caucus for Television Producers, Writers and Directors Foundation offers grants for students completing their thesis film, television, or interactive projects.

  • The Center for Documentary Studies offers an annual $20,000 Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize, awarded to a collaborative team consisting of a writer and photographer who are in the formative or fieldwork stage of a documentary project.

  • Creative Capital supports innovative and adventurous artists across the United States through funding, counsel and career development services.

  • The Fund for Women Artists provides a variety of free online networking, fundraising and advocacy services for women artists.

  • The Grantsmanship Center offers training and publications to help organizations plan solid programs, write logical, compelling grant proposals and create earned income opportunities.

  • Hispanic Scholarship Fund is designed to provide financial resources to outstanding Latino undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a creative arts related field: media, film, performing arts, communications, writing, etc. This grant is only intended to assist students in beginning and completing an art project.

  • Illinois Art Council Agency assists Illinois artists to realize a career goal, take advantage of a professional opportunity, or to produce and present an artistic project.

  • Institute of International Education, Artist Protection Fund is for artists who are facing or have recently fled from immediate, severe, and targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or countries of residence

  • The Jerome Foundation has announced its new grant programs in support of the creation, development and production of new works by emerging artists in New York City and Minnesota.

  • The Joan Mitchell Foundation aids and assists contemporary artists to demonstrate that painting and sculpture are significant cultural necessities. To further this mandate, the Foundation supports visual artists through a range of grant programs.

  • Leeway Foundation’s grantmaking programs honor women and trans artists for their ability to create social change through their artistic and cultural work.

  • The Light Work Grants in Photography support artists working in Central New York. The $3,000 grants are awarded to encourage the development of ongoing projects and the creation of new work. The work of the grant recipients is exhibited at Light Work and reproduced in an annual book.

  • New England Foundation for the Arts offers grants to artists and organizations to support the creation and presentation of work.

  • The Pollack-Krasner Foundation offers dual criteria grants for recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need, whether professional, personal or both. The Foundation's mission is to aid, internationally, those individuals who have worked as professional artists over a significant period of time.

  • Puffin Foundation provides grants to artists and art organizations who are often excluded from mainstream opportunities due to their race, gender, or social philosophy and for work that addresses social and environmental issues.

  • Rasmuson Foundation offers grants to Alaska-based nonprofits, individual artists, and nonprofit leaders and are aimed at promoting a better life for all Alaskans.

  • The Sustainable Arts Foundation is a non-profit foundation supporting artists and writers with families. Their mission is to provide financial awards to parents pursuing creative work.

  • *The Terra Foundation offers a wide range of grant and fellowship opportunities, including funding for exhibitions, academic programs, fellowships and visiting professorships, publications, and support for K-12 education and public programs in Chicago.


Residencies

  • 18th Street Art Center's Residency Program provides subsidized live and work space for arts organizations and artists in Santa Monica, California.

  • Acre is an artist-run non-profit with a yearly residency in Steuben, Wisconsin.

  • Akademie Solitude offers a combined apartment / studio, furnished with electricity, water and heat free of charge, a stipend amounting to Euro 1,150 monthly (plus one-time expenses incurred by the fellowship holder travelling to and from Stuttgart from his or her primary place of residence).The Akademie may also offer additional financial supplements, depending on its respective budget situation.

  • Archie Bray Foundation ceramics residencies range from a few months to up to two years in Montana.

  • ArtCorps strengthens international development initiatives by sending volunteer professional artists to work with Central American organizations.

  • Art Farm offers artists an opportunity to live and work in a rural environment. Located in rural Nebraska, Art Farm has an abundance of art and materials, which allows for interactions between ideas and the environment.

  • Banff Centre is a globally respected arts, cultural, and educational institution located in Alberta, Canada.

  • Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts provides its residents with well-equipped studio spaces, living accommodations and monthly stipends in Omaha, Nebraska.

  • *BOLT Residency is a highly competitive, juried, one-year artist studio residency program offering contemporary emerging artists the opportunity to engage the Chicago arts community and its public in critical dialogue about contemporary art.

  • Caldera offers month-long retreats to selected artists and writers during the winter months in Oregon.

  • The Center for Land Use Interpretation accepts proposals to conduct research and pursue thematic interpretive projects in the region using CLUI facilities in Wendover, Nevada.

  • Civitella Ranieri Foundation provides residencies to visual artists, musicians and writers on an invitational basis in a 15th century castle in Umbria, Italy.

  • The Core Program awards residencies to candidates who have completed their graduate or undergraduate training and are developing a sustainable practice. Helmed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Also offered is the Dora Maar Fellowship.

  • Cornerstone Institute Summer Residency is for individuals seeking to study and collaborate with professionals who are well-versed in ensemble, community-based theater. Located in Los Angeles, California.

  • Djerassi Residency Program is designed as a retreat experience to pursue personal creative work and share in collegial interaction within a small community of artists. Located in Woodside, California.

  • EFA Studio Program provides a private studio for a period of up to two years that is subsidized at below market cost. Located in Manhattan, New York City.

  • Fine Arts Work Center offers a residency for writers and visual artists in the crucial early stages of their careers. Located in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

  • Franconia Sculpture Park offers an Artists' Residency program through the Jerome Fellowship and an Intern Artist program for emerging artists. Located in Minnesota.

  • The Harpo Foundation Emerging Artist Residency Fellowship at the Santa Fe Art Institute provides an annual opportunity to an emerging visual artist 25 years and older who needs time and space to explore ideas and start new projects. Located in New Mexico.

  • Headlands Center for the Arts' Artist in Residence Program offers fully sponsored, live-in and live-out residencies to around 30 artists each year from March to November. Located in Sausalito, California.

  • Hothouse Program at UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures provides a residency for the creation of new work. Located in Los Angeles, California.

  • *Jackman Goldwasser Residency provides a platform for five international, national, and local artists each year to take creative risks within their practice and expand their professional networks while living and working in Chicago.

  • The Joan Mitchell Foundation offers a residency over a period of one to five months. While staying in the Center’s lodging in New Orleans’ historic Faubourg Tremé neighborhood, artists are ideally situated to access the myriad and unique stimuli of a historically dense city.

  • Kala Art Institute’s Artist-in-Residence Program provides accepted artists with 24-hour access to Kala’s Print Studio and Electronic Media Center in Berkeley, California.

  • The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts offers approximately 70 juried residencies per year to visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists from across the country and around the world. The center offers special priority residency awards to those who have recently completed a graduate program in one of the creative disciplines. Each resident is provided with comfortable accommodations, ample studio space, and a weekly $100 stipend for the duration of their stay. Located in Nebraska.

  • Light Work invites between twelve and fifteen artists to come to Syracuse, New York to devote one month to creative projects. The residency includes a $5,000 stipend, a furnished artist apartment, 24-hour access to our state-of-the-art facilities, and generous staff support.

  • *Lillstreet’s Artist-in-Residence Program provides a unique opportunity for artists to work in a collaborative, community-based arts center on the north side of Chicago.

  • MacDowell Colony is designed to facilitate a balance between a focus on work and interdisciplinary interaction. Located in New Hampshire.

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts’ Artist-in-Residence program is designed to support selected artists by providing financial and community resources, space, and access to equipment to assist in the creation and promotion of their work. Residencies may be from two weeks to three months in duration.

  • Millay Colony for the Arts offers one-month residencies to six visual artists, writers and composers each month between the months of April and November. Located in upstate New York.

  • New York Arts Practicum is a summer arts institute where participants experientially learn to bridge their lives as art students into lives as artists in the world. The program is structured around apprenticeships with mentor artists, a critique seminar where participants produce work without access to their institutional facilities, and site visits to artist workspaces, galleries, and museums.

  • One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre Summer Lab Intensive is open to actors, writers, directors, dancers and other artists with advanced study in their field. Located in Alberta, Canada.

  • Oregon College of Art & Craft offers a semester-long program for emerging artists and a summer residency for mid-career artists in Portland, Oregon.

  • Ox-Bow is located in Saugatuck, Michigan and offers residencies to artists and also awards fellowships to twelve students from competitive art schools and departments all over the nation. These students live on campus for the duration of the summer season. Financial aid in the form of scholarships is available.

  • Rabbit Island is a 91 acre forested island in Lake Superior three miles east of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Residents receive funding to live and work on the island. In addition to a generous honoraria, artists are invited to participate in an annual exhibition, event series, and publication, presented in partnership with the DeVos Art Museum in Marquette, Michigan.

  • Ragdale is an artists' retreat situated 30 miles north of Chicago.

  • The Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program is a contemporary art focused residency located in Roswell, New Mexico.

  • St. Elmo Arts Residency is a joint project of the Department of Art and Art History and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin that offers one fellowship each academic year to a newly minted MFA artist.

  • Sitka Center's Residency Program hosts approximately 12 artists, writers, and natural science scholars each year on the Oregon Coast north of Lincoln City.

  • Skowhegan is an intensive nine-week summer residency program for emerging visual artists established in 1946.

  • SOMA is non-profit located in Mexico City with a range of education and residency opportunities.

  • STUDIO for Creative Inquiry hosts a year-long residency program to connect established artists to the robust science-technology resources at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

  • *ThreeWalls Artist-In-Residence Program offers artists studio space in Chicago.

  • Triangle Arts Association offers spacious studios and a dynamic artistic community to support the development of ambitious projects with emphasis on dialogue and experimentation. Located at 20 Jay Street in Brooklyn, New York.

  • Vermont Studio Center is now the largest international artists' and writers' Residency Program in the United States. Located in Vermont.

  • The Wassaic Artist Residency and the Wassaic project are two separate but closely connected organizations that offer complementary programming and are co-located at the Maxon Mills, Luther Barn and surrounding facilities, in Wassaic, New York.

  • Webb School Artist in Residence Program is a K-12 independent day school of about 1,000 students located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Visiting artists arrive in October or February and spend five weeks on campus. During their tenure, artists work half of each day on their own work and spend the other half interacting formally with students in art classes.

  • The Whitney Independent Study Program provides a setting within which students pursuing art practice, curatorial work, art historical scholarship, and critical writing engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the historical, social, and intellectual conditions of artistic production.

  • Women’s Studio Workshop is a residency in Rosendale, New York for women and women-identified artists. A variety of residency grants are available.

  • Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild offers both one-month residencies in summer to visual artists and writers, and Ceramics Residencies for one to five months, May through October in Woodstock, New York.

  • Yaddo offers residencies to professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds in Saratoga Springs, New York.
